Concept Design: Chromat
After graduating from the UVA School of Architecture, founder + creative director of Chromat, Becca McCharen-Tran, began her career working at urban design and architectural firms. Constructing layouts and plans for various projects eventually fueled her infatuation with the linear characteristics of scaffolding -- which enticed her to apply her architectural expertise to structural experiments that could also be utilized for the human body.
Bionic LED Bra | FW14 | Bionic Bodies
The classic black cages are created with a boning material -- these were the utilitarian 'experiments' that started it all. However, as Chromat began to evolve, the collections became a lot more playful -- even incorporating fully functional LED lights infused in the lingerie pieces for their FW14 collection. Eventually the label also introduced an assortment of swimsuits, athletic wear, footwear, and accessories. Chromat is also known for its emphasis on inclusion and diversity, featuring runway + print models reflective of all genders and sizes.
Chromat's FW18 collection was inspired by personal watercrafts and kayaking trips. Another cheeky muse is Cheetos -- the snack food -- which the color palette of this collection is reminiscent of. (pictured below)
